Kabadu, which means “portage,” is an individualized homework and after-school support program for Aboriginal youth age 12 to 17. In a culturally relevant environment, youth are guided in their academic progress by Aboriginal tutors, mainly senior students who have persevered in their academic pursuits. Academic support is provided as part of an overall school dropout prevention approach that focuses on developing autonomy, personal fulfillment, and recognition of studies to build confidence, self-esteem, and life skills in each student. The VDNFC seeks to effect change in one or more of the four aspects of the human being (spiritual, mental, physical, and emotional) so that youth can achieve a better balance.
